What Is Pick/Pack in Warehouse Management?

May 9, 2017

Warehouse management is a term that encompasses a variety of different tasks, including the pick/pack ones. Even though each of these tasks is separate of the other one, they often fit together to process and move products out of the warehouse. If workers are inefficient with either one of these functions, it will slow the shipping process down, and this may result in customer dissatisfaction since the customers typically are in a hurry for their orders.

The Pick Process

First, an order must come into the warehouse and today, this occurs through a computer-generated form that even includes the location of the products along with the quantity and stock number. These forms also include the appropriate shipping label for the pack process.

The workers travel a specific path in the warehouse to arrive at the appropriate location for each product. Quantities can be one singular item or one case of it up to multiple cases of each item. After the workers pick their orders, they transport the orders to a designated area. Orders are double checked for accuracy before being sent to the workers who will pack the items, and we cover this step in the next section.

What the Pack Step Entails in Warehouse Management

If single items are part of the order, each one needs a method of protection that suits its nature as a packer places it in a sturdy shipping box or other container. When the packers are dealing with cases of products, often this process is unnecessary as they can just prepare the cases for shipping. Either way, the last steps are to weigh and label the containers in the right way and place them in the appropriate area for pickup by the designated shipping or delivery agent.

Benefits of Outsourcing Your Pick/Pack Needs

As with your other warehousing tasks, there are definite benefits to outsourcing your pick/pack needs, such as:

  • Computerised order forms
  • Automatic inventory control since the computerised system adds the incoming stock and deducts the outgoing stock
  • The ideal pick/pack methods are utilised for your products
  • You will not need to hire additional employees when an increase occurs in your orders
  • The shipping of orders will happen in a timely, accurate manner
