Effective Warehouse Management Tips

July 12, 2016

Warehouse management can include a wide range of duties and responsibilities. Duties can vary from assessing employees and supervising to shipping, receiving, purchasing, distributing products, storage and inventory control. In truth, managing a warehouse is a harsh job. However, there are a few tips and guidelines that can help you do an exceptional job to ensure that your employees are protected and your products are safe and secure.

Stay Clean and Organized

The warehouse should always be clean, neat and well organized. Products and boxes should be stacked efficiently and never be allowed in the aisles where people can trip. Walkways and isles should also be free of debris and spills. As well, vehicle lanes and pedestrian walkways need to be marked with extremely visible floor markings. Other helpful tips for organizing include:

  • Ensure safety by managing cords on the floor with cord covers or tape
  • Add hooks or storage lockers for extra wall space and better organizing
  • Make sure that overhanging equipment and cables are not hanging over the aisles or walkways

Good Lighting

All areas should always have proper lighting. Using bright lights helps employees be aware of their surroundings and keeps them alert. Make certain that there are no dark areas and lights are replaced immediately when they burn out.

Educate Employees about Safety

One of the main tips of warehouse management is educating and training the staff about general warehouse safety practices. In fact, all employees should attend training on warehouse safety standards. It is because many injuries are caused from inadequate training and improper handling of materials including how to pick up items, how to carry products, loading safety, proper equipment operation, stacking products and other important safety concerns. Tips for safety training include:

A safety program specially designed for your company.

Training that includes, archived materials like print-out and video, hands on experience/examples and online testing. As well, you should have regular safety checks and make sure all equipment is up-to-date with standards.

Mechanical Equipment Training

All employees who operate mechanical equipment should undergo proper training such as mechanical loaders, forklifts, shrink wrappers, lifters and electric stackers. As well, employees should be certified to operate th equipment (if possible). Specific training to consider:

  • Verifiable certification for safety and equipment operations if applicable (such as a forklift).
  • Full training that includes safety protocols, hazard identification, proper and fast response to hazards and proper loading dock procedures.
